Penang Day 2 (Post-Trip): Coffee Tree, Tealeaf and Batik

After Bukit Bendera / Penang Hill, we were driven to three warehouse-like outlets located side by side, Coffee Tree, Treeleaf and Cocoa Boutique. The location is near the Butterfly Farm, which is currently closed for upgrading. A little bit further away is the batik factory.

This was not part of our original itinerary, but was recommended by the driver.

Coffee Tree

Coffee Tree
Expensive but nice coffee.

We were given a sticker to paste on as we entered. Later on, I realised that this is the practice for these sort of outlets.

I headed straight to the pile of chocolate drinks, thinking to just grab and go, but was herded back to the pile of coffee beverage pile. We were made to sample at least 7 coffee drink flavours! The salesperson claimed that they have over 40 flavours (coconut, latte, tiramisu, durian, hazelnut etc.). That’s an insane amount!

A pack of 15 sachets costs 39RM. There was a promotion when I went there – buy 7 get 1 free.

The price may be steep but they do taste quite nice, so if you’re planning to buy some, buy a lot. I regretted not doing so (a lot of us did). If you do not have enough cash, they accept Visa as well.

For me, I had been enraptured by the taste of coconut white coffee since someone brought it back from Sabah years ago. So I am forever on a look out for it.

Coconut White Coffee
I like how there are minimal ingredients. I saw Hypermarts carry the same brand, but the packaging is different and the ingredients were way more, with addition of emulsifiers and preservatives. Think of it this way…you’re paying more for quality.

This blogpost quite sums up the experience (Although the location of the place where we went is different. They probably have more than one outlet?)

The good news is that they do ship out (their website). The bad news is that, it’s even pricier! Big ouch.

The cocoa beverages didn’t taste that nice, though I’m not sure if it’s because of all the coffee I had downed. I ended up just buying the coffee.

Tealeaf

tealeaf

Tealeaf is one of Coffee Tree’s products. It has a wide range of tea beverages as well, including durian tea, Penang teh tarik etc.

Having drunk quite a fair bit of coffee, and chocolate beverages, I declined most of the tea samples here. I did try a few – the teh tarik, strawberry milk tea and banana milk tea.

Of all, the banana milk tea left the most impression on me. It tastes exactly like liquified jemput-jemput pisang, which, strange as it sounds, tastes quite yummy. I didn’t buy it though, one of the things I’ve come to regret.

This was because, after spending around 100RM at Coffee Tree, I was pretty reluctant to spend more at Tealeaf.

Cocoa Boutique

As with Coffee Tree and Tealeaf, we were taken around the outlet to sample the various types of products they were selling. After the first few samples, I knew this was it – I had to get out fast. The chocolate tasted a lot less cocoa and a lot more of margarine (for me anyway). It tasted quite terrible to me.

Stay away if you are a chocolate lover.

(On a side note, Coffee Tree sells Shabbat line from Beryl’s. Beryl’s is a mid-range chocolate product, so if you’re into Royce and the like, you’d probably hate it? I’ve eaten Beryl’s below, especially the tiramisu products. I highly recommend the Tiramisu white chocolate with almond.)

Bonus: A google search for Shabbat turned up the following listing. Quite amusing.

Penang Batik Factory

Penang Batik Factory is another tourist attraction, located at Teluk Bahang, a few minutes drive away from the Coffee Tree/Cocoa Boutique/Tealeaf row.

A guide will bring the visitors about the back to for tour of the batik-making process, and then back into the showroom, where the finished products are displayed for purchase. The cloth may vary from cotton to silk. Be prepared to pay quite a hefty sum for it.
